"If there is any principle of the Constitution that more imperatively calls for attachment than any other, it is the principle of free thought -- not free thought only for those who agree with us, but freedom for the thought we hate." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes |
Today is
Easter is a day of renewal of faith, a day of resurrection of the spirit, a day a rejection of things that don't jive with those first two ideals. On Easter, 2002, I at least as beowulf42 decided to leave cybertown.com, frankly, because I came to loathe some of the things that went on there and some of the people there.
If you are looking for the journal of my travels to more than 10,000 homes in ct, it's not here. It won't be here, at least not in its previous form. If you really want to see it as it was, I would be happy to email it to you. Just ask and give me some time to put it in a ZIP file. What you will see here in the future is a revised journal. It will give me something to do while I am weaning myself off 3D World, as I came to call cybertown.
No I was not banned, gagged or anything in 3D World. I am sure they would have liked to do so, but I never really gave them any cause to within the confines of their site. They had their precious, albeit illogical rules, which I tried mightily to avoid breaking. I used this place as my bully pulpit to point out what I felt, and still feel, were, and are, inequities, inconsistencies, and just plain silliness of the people and the site itself. Don't get me wrong, here. I truly believe that many fine people go to cybertown on a regular basis, that they are God fearing, law abiding people in real life. Others, however, are condescending, power hungry, ne'erdowells who don't know the first thing about people or how to treat people, even though they claim they do. I have come to believe that the people in charge of cybertown are incompetent, that the supposed leaders are impotent, and that there is indeed behind the scenes intrigue to which most users, myself included, are not privy. Make that never were and never will be privy
Some people choose to rant and vent their frustrations with cybertown at a place called www.cybertownexploits.cc, which I have to warn you is perfectly willing to allow all kinds of strange links and forceful language. I've been to that site, posted some stuff, and read much of their stuff. To tell you the truth, I probably made some of them angry as well with comments I have made there and here. Such is my life. I try not to be an obsequious pawn, but rather an obtuse soul, and I pride myself on trying to be just that, a fly in the ointment if you will. Still, I probably have more in common with this semi-independent bunch than with the power brokers of cybertown for whom I will continue to have a healthy disrespect. The people in cybertown will probably think I have gone over to the dark side. Nothing could be further from the truth. The truth is that I speak my mind, and if that coincides with what some other people think, so be it. If not, well, I can't help it if they're wrong and I'm right.
The journal from the past nine months was started as an exercise to get me writing something every day. Now it's time to try to pull it together into something more meaningful for me and for anybody who cares to read it. The wonder of the Internet is that it allows me to do this. This country allows me to do this. Unlike under cybertown's rules which I personally find not only illogical and silly, but also highly offensive, here I can and will speak my mind. Unlike cybertown which I believe routinely bans or excludes those who say something against it or the people in charge of it, I don't have to abide by anybody's rules but my own here. I plan on doing just that. If I do head back to 3d World, it will be not be under any more assumed names. I ain't playing around anymore!
So here will be my assessment of a fake world on the Internet, where people pretend to be someone else, anybody they please to be, and where it gets too real for some people. It is based on my personal experiences and observations, nobody else's. First up is a somewhat expurgated version of the entire beowulf42 journal entries. For the sake of brevity and for faster easier loading, I have eliminated most screen shots and images. What is next in the coming days and months? Beats the hell outta me, but I figure I'll find somethng to say. You can find out if you just stay tuned.
